Testing Stellar Evolution Theory with the Binary Fraction of Low-Mass White Dwarfs
نویسنده
چکیده
We describe spectroscopic observations of 21 low-mass (< 0.45M⊙) white dwarfs from the PalomarGreen Survey obtained over a period of four years. We use both radial velocity analysis and infrared photometry to identify binary systems, and find that the fraction of single, low-mass white dwarfs is 30 with an uncertainty of 18%. We discuss the inverse relationship between the mass and the binary fraction of white dwarfs and compare this relationship to existing theoretical models. We also compare the period distribution of 0.2 and 0.4 solar mass white dwarfs and find that lower mass white dwarfs have systematically shorter orbital periods. Our results support the idea that single low-mass white dwarfs can be formed through enhanced mass-loss from a metal-rich progenitor star. This work is supported in part by the NSF REU and DOD ASSURE programs under NSF grant no. 0754568 and by the Smithsonian Institution.

Low Luminosity Companions to White Dwarfs
This paper presents results of a near-infrared imaging survey for low mass stellar and substellar companions to white dwarfs. A wide field proper motion survey of 261 white dwarfs was capable of directly detecting companions at orbital separations between ∼ 100 and 5000 AU with masses as low as 0.05 M⊙, while a deep near field search of 86 white dwarfs was capable of directly detecting companio...
متن کاملOn a Theoretical Interpretation of the Period Gap in Binary Millisecond Pulsars
We reexamine evolutionary channels for the formation of binary millisecond pulsars in order to understand their observed orbital period distribution. The available paths provide a natural division into systems characterized by long orbital periods (∼> 60 days) and short orbital periods (∼< 30 days). Systems with initial periods ∼ 1− 2 days, mainly driven by the loss of orbital angular momentum,...
متن کاملSubluminous B Stars and Progenitors of Helium Core White Dwarfs
It is now generally accepted that the subluminous B (sdB) stars can be identified with models for Extreme Horizontal Branch (EHB) stars burning He in their core, but with a very tiny inert hydrogen envelope (Heber, 1986). An EHB star bears great resemblance to a helium main-sequence star of half a solar mass and its further evolution should proceed similarly (i.e. directly to the white dwarf gr...
متن کاملFinding White Dwarfs with Transit Searches
We make predictions for the rate of discovery of eclipsing white dwarf–main sequence (WD–MS) binaries in terrestrial-planet transit searches, taking the planned Kepler and Eddington missions as examples. We use a population synthesis model to characterize the Galactic WD–MS population, and we find that, despite increased noise due to stellar variability compared with the typical planetary case,...
متن کاملThe True Incidence of Magnetism Among Field White Dwarfs
We study the incidence of magnetism in white dwarfs from three large and well-observed samples of hot, cool and nearby white dwarfs in order to test whether the fraction of magnetic degenerates is biased, and whether it varies with effective temperature, cooling age, or distance. The magnetic fraction is considerably higher for the cool sample of Bergeron, Ruiz, & Leggett, and the Holberg, Oswa...
